Paragliding in Medellín: Everything First-Timers Need to Know
May 25, 2026 · 3 min read
Medellín sits in a valley ringed by mountains, which makes it one of the more reliable places in Colombia to paraglide. The thermals that rise off the surrounding hills give pilots consistent lift, and several launch points around the city offer views over the Aburrá Valley that are hard to get any other way.
What tandem paragliding actually involves
If you've never flown before, tandem paragliding means you're harnessed in front of a certified pilot who controls the wing and handles takeoff and landing. You don't need any prior experience or particular fitness level — the hardest part, physically, is a short running start at launch, and even that's guided step by step by the pilot.
Flights typically last somewhere around 15 to 25 minutes depending on conditions, gliding over the valley with views of Medellín's neighborhoods, the surrounding mountains, and, on clear days, a genuinely wide stretch of the city below.
What it actually feels like
Most first-timers expect it to feel like a rollercoaster. It doesn't. Once you're airborne, paragliding is closer to floating than falling — there's a brief adrenaline spike at takeoff, and then the flight settles into something surprisingly calm. The biggest surprise for most people is how quiet it is once you're up.
What to wear and bring
- Closed-toe shoes with good grip — sneakers or hiking shoes, not sandals.
- Layers. It's noticeably cooler at launch altitude than in the city below.
- Nothing loose or easily dropped — pockets that zip are safer than ones that don't, since you'll be harnessed and can't easily catch a falling phone.
- Sunglasses, since you'll be facing into open air and sun for the duration of the flight.
What determines whether you fly
Paragliding is weather-dependent. Wind speed and direction, visibility, and general conditions are all assessed by the pilots before every flight, and trips can be rescheduled on short notice if conditions aren't safe. This isn't a formality — it's the reason paragliding in Medellín has a strong safety record. If a flight gets postponed because of weather, treat it as the system working as intended, not a booking problem.
Is it worth doing if you're nervous about heights
Most people who are nervous about heights on the ground report feeling fine once airborne — the sensation of being harnessed to an experienced pilot, combined with the slow, controlled nature of the flight, tends to be much less intimidating than the anticipation beforehand. That said, if heights are a genuine concern, it's worth being upfront with your pilot before takeoff so they can talk you through what to expect.
