Medellín vs Cartagena: Which Colombian City Should You Visit First?
June 22, 2026 · 3 min read
Colombia's two most-visited cities couldn't be more different, and that's exactly why the "Medellín or Cartagena?" question comes up so often. One is a mountain city with a cool, spring-like climate and easy access to day trips; the other is a walled colonial port on the Caribbean coast, hot and humid, built for a slower, beach-adjacent pace. Neither is objectively "better" — they suit different kinds of trips.
Medellín, in short
Medellín is a city of neighborhoods and day trips. El Poblado and Laureles offer a modern, walkable base with strong food and nightlife scenes, while the surrounding region — Guatapé, Jardín, Hacienda Nápoles, the Oriente — gives you a different landscape almost every day without needing to change hotels. The climate stays mild year-round, which makes it comfortable for hiking, paragliding, and other outdoor activities.
Medellín is the better fit if you want: a home base with easy day trips into the mountains, cooler weather, and a mix of city and nature in the same trip.
Cartagena, in short
Cartagena is built around its walled Old City — a UNESCO World Heritage Site with colonial architecture, plazas, and balconies dripping with bougainvillea — plus the Caribbean itself, with beaches and island day trips a short boat ride away. It's hotter and more humid than Medellín, and the pace is generally slower: more strolling and lounging, less hiking and adventure sports.
Cartagena is the better fit if you want: beach time, colonial architecture, Caribbean nightlife, and a warmer, more languid trip overall.
What about doing both?
If your schedule allows, Medellín and Cartagena pair well as a two-city trip — there are frequent direct flights between them, generally under an hour and a half in the air. A common structure is several days in Medellín for the city and day trips, followed by a shorter, more relaxed stretch in Cartagena to close out the trip with beach time and colonial streets.
Quick comparison
| Medellín | Cartagena | |
|---|---|---|
| Climate | Mild, spring-like year-round | Hot, humid, coastal |
| Pace | Active — day trips, hiking, adventure | Relaxed — beaches, strolling |
| Landscape | Mountains and valleys | Caribbean coast |
| Best for | Nature, adventure, city + day trips | Beaches, history, nightlife |
Our take
If you only have time for one city and you enjoy being active outdoors, choose Medellín. If your priority is beach time and colonial charm, choose Cartagena. If you can manage both, even a shorter Cartagena add-on at the end of a Medellín-based trip is worth it — the contrast between the two is part of what makes Colombia such a varied destination.
